The truth about tanning
Dermatologists tell us to practice total sun avoidance. However there is not a single study linking tanning to skin cancer. Sunburn is linked to skin cancer, tanning is not. The sun transforms cholesterol in the skin into Vitamin D, so your body NEEDS sun.
Why is Vitamin D important?
It helps bones absorb calcium. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is depression caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Numerous medical studies prove that adequate Vitamin D levels protect the body from colon, breast, skin and prostate cancer.
What’s the best way to increase our levels of Vitamin D?
The form of Vitamin D in milk is toxic and not readily useable by the body. You can get it from fatty fish, eggs and butter, but only if the hens and cows are raised outside. Even the best supplements don’t provide adequate levels of Vitamin D and, besides, the best and least expensive way is to get it from the sun.
What if you burn quickly in the sun?
Start with short exposure and build up tolerance. If you are not tanned and you need to spend hours outside, you should use protection, but be discriminating because the chemicals that block UV radiation are known carcinogens. (Try a non-toxic brand called California Baby).
Does sun exposure mean you have to go out in your swimsuit?
Yes! Exposing your arms and face is not enough. Sit outside in your swimsuit for ten or fifteen minutes, longer if you’re dark skinned.
Tanning beds – good or bad?
Tanning beds can be beneficial. The cheaper ones are better because they provide both UVA and UVB radiation. The more expensive ones concentrate on UVA so are less similar to natural sunlight. No more than 10 minutes twice a week is safe and provides adequate Vitamin D.
What’s the best solution for sunburn?
Essential fatty acid supplements help; aloe vera works wonderfully; homeopathic remedies give quick relief from pain.
