Myths and Misconceptions About Pregnancy
Modern medicine treats pregnancy like a disease, and birth as if it is a medical emergency. Neither of these is true. When we see that women in America have more problems having babies than women in rural Africa, we realize that it is what we do around pregnancy and birth that causes many of the problems.
As soon as pregnancy occurs and you go to your obstetrician, a whole medical apparatus kicks into action. Much of it is not necessary, but it creates stress that can cause complications. Once you go to hospital to give birth, the staff is paying attention to the monitors they have hooked you up to, rather than supporting you and the natural process you are going through. It is a dehumanizing experience in a high adrenalin environment.
On the contrary, home labor is peaceful and relaxing. Anyone who is not at high risk can use a midwife at home or go to a birthing center.
The natural way through pregnancy
During pregnancy there are physiological changes in hormones and blood volume, and structural changes occur because of the extra weight you carry. Natural methods such as herbs and chiropractic can help relieve the discomfort caused by these changes.
Pre natal care
- Eat nourishing food like meat, vegetables and fruit. No junk – it pulls nutrients out of the body.
- Get plenty of light exercise like walking.
- Drink lots of water.
- Take high quality vitamins. Your natural health care practitioner can provide you with whole food concentrates that contain full vitamin complexes.
Post natal problems
The most common occurrence is post-partum depression, which is treated medically with anti-depressants. But that’s not where the problem lies: the problem is that the adrenal glands are worn out, and this can be prevented. If it does occur it is easily treated with natural methods.
Getting pregnant
Again, modern medicine treats infertility like a disease and it tries to control the process and force pregnancy to occur by using drugs and other intrusive methods. In natural medicine we look at the reasons why you are not getting pregnant. Often it’s because your body is not healthy enough to conceive so we explore ways to improve your overall health and create the optimal environment for a pregnancy. Many problems can be fixed with herbs or nutrition.
The most important thing to remember is that pregnancy and birth are natural processes, not events to stress about, so enjoy them!
