Alternative Vs. Traditional Medicine – Which Is Right?
Often there’s a lot of animosity between traditional and alternative medicine. The truth is, in spite of differences between them, both approaches are valid - at the right time.
Differences in philosophy
Traditional medicine believes we have to treat the disease, and that it is caused by germs or genes. In other words, it’s not your fault – you can eat what you want, do what you want and something else makes you sick.
Alternative medicine believes you have a great deal of influence over your health and that all systems of your body work together to promote health or disease.
Differences in practice
Traditional medicine diagnoses and then chooses drugs or surgery to treat the diagnosis.
Alternative medicine uses nutrition, herbs, acupuncture, chiropractic and other modalities to correct the underlying situation so that the body can take care of the problem itself.
Western medicine tries to control the body by using drugs and surgery to make it do what they want it to do. Of course there are times when this approach is necessary. If you have acute bacterial meningitis, it’s critical to get it under control as quickly as possible because you could die before the underlying problem is corrected. However you don’t want to control the body with drugs for years.
But if you have a recurring strep throat, perhaps the problem is that your immune system is not working as well as it can to fight off infection on its own.
Which do I choose?
Both are appropriate at different times and sometimes they can work together. Hospitals in China use them side by side. The patient can choose. That’s the ideal situation.
It’s up to you to educate yourself so you can take responsibility for your health and make up your own mind about the right approach for your situation.
Dr. Brown’s story
While studying for a BS in Medical Biology and volunteering in the Emergency Room, the Recovery Room and the Pharmacy, Dr. Brown saw the limitations of western medicine. Later, when he became ill and western doctors could not find out what was wrong, an alternative health practitioner discovered that he wasn’t getting enough sleep or good quality nutrition. When he corrected these conditions, his good health returned. That’s when his life changed direction and he became a doctor of alternative medicine.
