Cancer: Detection and Prevention

Cancer is the number 2 killer in the US and may soon become number 1.

Cancer occurs when a cell loses the signal to follow the natural process of growth, division and death. It becomes a renegade, dividing and multiplying out of control.

Screening for cancer

Recent news that women can wait until 50 to begin screening with mammograms ignores the fact that many women develop breast cancer in their 40s.

However, a mammogram is not a good diagnostic method because it exposes tissue to ionizing radiation which can cause the cell mutation that leads to cancer. There is no way to know when this will be triggered. By the time a tumor shows up on a mammogram, it has usually been there for about 5 years already.

Probe thermography is a better alternative: it can pick up a suspicious breast problem long before it appears on a mammogram. Ultrasound shows up growths as well. It can be followed by an MRI, which provides more detail than a mammogram, without the radiation.

How can we prevent cancer?

The biggest factor is diet. As our diet moves further away from natural foods, the incidence of cancer is rising.

Don't eat:

  • Refined carbohydrates.
  • Sugar
  • Transfatty acids.
  • Imitation fats in shortenings and margarines.
  • Food additives such as MSG, aspartame, as well as pesticides, herbicides, and hormones.
  • Artificial colorings.
  • Processed foods.

Do eat:

  • Saturated fats. Saturated fats strengthen the immune system and are necessary for the proper metabolism of other fats.
  • Natural fats and protein from healthy animals such as cows raised on grass.
  • Organic fruits and vegetables.
  • Limited amounts of complex carbohydrates.

What nutrients help prevent cancer?

Vitamins A, C and E help protect from cancer but only if they come from food, not from a laboratory. Studies show that synthetic vitamins increase the risk of cancer and mega doses of Vitamin C deplete the body of nutrients.

Minerals also play an important role in protection against all types of cancers but they too have to come from food.

How do you recognize a nutritional deficiency?

Blood tests aren’t always accurate because the body compensates in order to balance blood chemistry. By the time something shows up in the blood, a lot of damage has already occurred.

An Applied Kinesiologist can determine what is lacking, based on your body’s needs, not on a general test. If a synthetic supplement should be necessary, it is used for a short time only. For long-term use, whole food supplements replenish the body’s nutrients in a healthy form.
